"--so perfect! The kiss accompanied by the fireworks, it was so beautiful and--"
"I know, now can you please shut up? Someone's trying to study here,"
"Fine. I'm going out, do you need anything?"
Anne sighed as soon as her roommate left their room. Then suddenly, she broke, tears were streaming down her face and she couldn't stop them. "Why? Why?" She was there that night. She was there when they sealed their fates with a kiss. Normally, she wouldn't believe superstitious such as 'the person you shared a kiss with during THAT night will be the person you'll spend eternity with' but that happened to her parents and her other relatives. It was childish to say 'she was supposed to be the one holding hands with Zeke, she should have been the one who shared that kiss with Zeke' she should have been Zeke's best friend, scratch that, she was Zeke's best friend before Paige entered the picture. But she couldn't blame Paige; Paige is a nice girl, and she brings out the best in Zeke. If it wasn't for the burden she was carrying, she would be in Paige's shoes right now and she would live her blissful life with Zeke.
Then suddenly, everything went dark.
Anne regained consciousness and heard the beeping sound of the monitor that keeps tract of her heart. She kept her eyes closed, to tired to move her body. "Anne? Are you awake?" it was her roommate, Erin. Anne nodded."Do you need something? I co--" Anne interrupted her by saying, "Did I?"
"Yes. The doctors said your condition is getting worse, you should continue your chemotherapy,"
"No more, I'm so tired," Anne said weakly, "I just want to--" Anne gasped when a wave of pain attacked her system. "I just want to die,"
"Don't say that!"
"Can I tell you something?" Anne asked
"Promise not to tell anyone?"
There was a slight pause until Erin sighed and said 'Sure,'
"I like someone," Anne said while smiling, it takes a lot of energy for her to do that, but the thought of Zeke made it all worth it.
"He was my best friend but I left him when I was 14, the first time I learned about my condition,"
"I had to leave, I don't want him to get hurt when he found out about my sickness," Anne explained
"But wouldn't he be hurt to know that you left for no reason at all?" Erin asked
"But Paige was there for him, he didn't need me anymore,"
"Paige? You mean Zeke? Zeke is--"
"But what about you?"
"I had to move on, but somehow I couldn't forget him so I came back but he didn't recognize me. I wanted to introduce myself but I'm afraid I might hurt him again," Anne's voice was breaking when she continued, "It hurts Erin, to watch them so happy while I'm somewhere on the corner rotting my life away. But then I realized, I made my decision, I--I--I could never get him back."
"Anne," Erin cried as she held her friend's hands, "I'm so sorry," Anne smiled bitterly, "Did you know? He used to call me Stubborn girl. And it hurts to hear him calling Paige that,"
"Did you know, when we were still young we would camp on his backyard and sleeping under the stars?"
"Or when I get sick he always--"
"Anne, please. Your hurting yourself,"
"Always takes good care of me," Anne continued, her eyes still closed, "He would even sometimes go to my house and we would sleep together on the couch after watching cartoons,"
"Zeke hates Superman, he likes the Green Arrow better,"
"Please, Anne. You need to rest," Erin begged
Anne stayed quiet for a while until she called, "Erin?"
"One last thing,"
"He was my first kiss," Anne added, "But he didn't know it. He was asleep,"
"Erin, I love him. I love Zeke,"
Erin couldn't stop her tears, it was so unfair and cruel.
"Anne," it was no longer Erin's voice.
"Zeke," Anne said, "You've been here the whole time?"
Zeke held Anne's hands and squeezed it, "Why?"
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything," Anne cried.
It crushed Erin's heart to watch them. Life was so cruel and unfair for Anne. From what she learned from being friends with her for a year, Anne just wanted to lead a normal life. Have a job she enjoys, have a family with three kids. Live, love, and LIVE. But it seems that life has other plans for the girl, it gave her a harsh perspective of living. It made her fight for her life, survive or die young. It ruined the girl's future, her love, her education, her family and friends. She had to isolate herself from people so when she dies, no one would notice, no one would care, no one would get hurt.
Erin turned back to Zeke and Anne.
Zeke was on the other side of Anne hovering over her while crying. If Anne was only well, she would have been in Paige's position.
Anne still continued to apologize until Zeke spoke, "Stop blaming yourself, stubborn girl," Erin heard her friend whimpering."Zeke..." Zeke cupped Anne's pale and cold cheeks and brushed away the tears staining her porcelain skin. He pressed his lips on her temple, "Thank You," Anne whispered.
She released her last breath after she heard her name being uttered by the person she loved.
