I am Life

I watch as you step, step, step,
down that lonely street.
You wrap your arms around your torso,
and you whisper to yourself,
"Who am I now?"

I watch as you fall to the ground,
no strength to stand on your own.
A tear escapes, and you wipe it away.
You curl up and ask nobody,
"Where am I now?"

I watch as your bones grow brittle.
You can't move, and you won't eat.
You slowly waste away,
and you yell as loud as you can,
"Why is this happening to me?"

But does anyone hear you?
"Does anyone care?" you ask the stars.
But do they answer back?
No one is there to answer back.
"Have I pushed them all away?"
you ask your heart.
But does it answer back?

I watch as your heart stops answering,
As your brain stops listening.
Everything has passed you by,
and you just stood by your own selfish needs.
But I've always been there,
watching, listening.
I'm a silent being, always there, but never here.
